Why Zeus? Why Stark? Why Sean?

Have you wondered lately why Sean Bean was selected to play Zeus in Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief or to play Lord Eddard (Ned) Stark in HBO's pilot for Game of Thrones? or for Pyke and Reese in CASH? Why has Bean been chosen for these particular roles?

Why Zeus?

To many women in the world Sean Bean is a Greek God. So it was really no surprise that he was selected to play Zeus in Percy Jackson. If you add to that his powerful and very “godlike” deep voice there was no one else they could have selected. Zeus is describe as “king of the gods, the god of sky and weather, law, order and fate, a regal man…” who also seduced women “…in the form of a swan; a bull; a golden shower; and a satyr…” It had to be Sean, the man who seduced Lady Chatterley playing Game Keeper Mellors , playing the part of this mythical lover and god. (The movie is based on a children's book, so we may not see all facets of Zeus in this role). Sean Bean is also one of the few men in this world that can look extremely masculine and dangerous wearing a “skirt”, something we have proof of from the movie Troy. In Troy he played another Greek legend, Odysseus, to perfection and garnered many accolades for his performance as this trickster and traveler.

Chris Columbus, the Director of Percy Jackson, explained in a recent interview why he selected Sean Bean as Zeus :

“I had such a terrific experience working with British actors. It wasn’t just necessarily that they were all Brits; it was a matter of finding who would be believable as gods.

They had to have an other-worldly quality about them. People like Sean Bean, Kevin McKidd and Pierce Brosnan all seem to exist in this world, and also in another world as well. It is hard to explain. I just believe that Brits have been around forever.” To read the entire interview go to:

Why Ned Stark?

Sean Bean will prove to be the perfect selection for Lord Eddard (Ned) Stark if a pilot based on George RR Martin’s book A Game of Thrones, part of his great fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire, becomes an HBO series. Ned is a good hearted and honorable man tossed into a nest of human vipers . He comes from the land of Winterfell, a harsh and cold land, and many think the Starks are also harsh and cold. Ned Stark is also a leader of men, a tested warrior, who is loyal to the men who serve him, and loyal to lifelong friends like the monarch of this mythical land of Westeros, Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy). Sean is perfect for this role because he has played similar men with many of the same human layers; for example Richard Sharpe in the Sharpe series and Boromir in Lord of the Rings. But as Ned he also has to be a tender father to his children, especially to two girls. A father of girls fits Sean Bean entirely too well, since in real life he is the father of three lovely daughters. He is one of those rare actors who can wear chain mail and sword onscreen and look to all the world like those are the clothes he wears weekends at home.

Sean as an actor is a man for all times, and for mythical and real kingdoms and he will surprise many that know only his Hollywood bad guy roles with his range and versatility. The author of this fantasy series is on record as saying "he couldn't imagine a better Ned" than Sean Bean. If the series is picked up by HBO, Sean Bean will be Lord of the Fantasy Series World.

Why Norway??

We interrupt this article for news of a new brave warrior role for CASH star Sean Bean:

http://www.nrk.no/nyheter/distrikt/rogaland/1.6954171

If you don't read Norwegian the article is about a new movie Sean will be filming soon in Norway called "The Age of Heroes". Right now news of the film seems to come only from the Norwegian press, and from interviews with Sean's co-star in the film, fellow British actor Danny Dyer. The film is set in World War II. Sean Bean and Danny Dyer also co-starred recently in the UK film Outlaw. (Article link thanks to Toastie on TMB).

Why Pyke and Reese?

For the answer to that question look for the imminent release of The Film CASH.

A Whole Lotta Bean Slated for 2010!

Sean Bean has always had the mettle to show us what he’s got in terms of acting chops. The versatile actor has played many different parts over the years from the dirtiest low down villains to the most heroic of men… From the venomous rage of an Irish terrorist in Patriot Games to the heroic Boromir in Lord of the Rings, he can take us from the depths of hatred to the most courageous moments in a leader’s heart.

With several new projects set for release this year, Sean Bean is coming to the cinema with a vengeance in a variety of roles. Of course we have our own highly anticipated psychological thriller CASH which we expect to be released in the next several weeks. We will be treated to two versions of Bean in this suspenseful story of man who wants payback in the most sinister of ways.

IFC Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to the dark and gritty The Red Riding Trilogy, starring Sean Bean in his critically acclaimed role as shady real estate developer John Dawson. Paddy Considine and Steven Morrissey also star in the British noir series of three fictionalized accounts of the investigation into the Yorkshire Ripper, a brutal serial killer that stalked the Yorkshire area of England in the 1970s and 1980s. IFC Films will roll out in American theaters and on VOD in early February.

Then on February 10th, Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief will be released theatrically in the United States. Based on the hugely successful series of Fantasy Adventure books by Richard Riordan, Sean has the plummy role of Zeus, alongside such acting stalwarts as Pierce Brosnan and Uma Thurman. Someone has stolen Zeus’ thunderbolt and Percy sets out to find out whom. I don’t know about you, but one thing I’ve learned about Bean in his films; Don’t make him angry.

Also set for release in May is the film Black Death, starring Bean as Ulric, a fearsome knight who with his group of mercenaries is led by a young monk (Eddie Remayne) to a remote marsh where their quest is to hunt down a necromancer - someone able to bring the dead back to life. Once again, Bean will don the chain mail to bring down evil and we all know how menacing he can be when faced with a worthy nemesis.

And lastly, Sean Bean has just finished filming a pilot for Game of Thrones for HBO based on the massively successful medieval fantasy television series based on author George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. The project is in the process of being greenlit and rumor has it that it will very likely get the nod from the heads at HBO to film a further 11 episodes that could start as soon as March 2011. This series has all the hallmarks of a hugely successful series with Bean in the lead as Lord Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell. Jennifer Ehle Mark Addy and Peter Dinklage also star. Nearly everyone involved with the series agrees that Bean is perfectly cast as Ned Stark, the noble and just leader of the Stark Family who leads them through confrontations involving intrigue, politics and traitors galore. This is a role where Sean will get to show off his considerable ability to portray a strong, heroic leader; a man to root for, to believe in, to champion.

Which brings us back to our personal excitement for the impending release of CASH since Bean is playing the roles of twins for the first time in his career and gets to run the psychological gamut in Steven Milburn Anderson’s newest film. The trailers have shown we will be treated to several sides of Bean as he slips seamlessly from being friendly, generous and helpful to a man driven to manipulating and controlling a decent suburban couple, (Chris Hemsworth and Victoria Profeta) all in the almighty name of Money.

Love or hate the characters Bean plays, chances are you always believe him. CASH promises to be an exciting opportunity for both!

Screen Rant Has Great Praise for CASH

Moola, greenback, cheddar, lettuce, Benjamins, dough, c-note, buck or cash – whatever term you use to describe it, everyone needs more money (even James Cameron, apparently). Have you ever found some money on the ground and kept it? Of course you have. Everyone does that, there’s no way to figure out who dropped that lone twenty or fifty dollar bill, so might as well keep it! But what if the money was in a wallet? That changes the whole game. You could take the money out and return the wallet saying you found it empty – or, if your moral standards are slightly higher, just return it like you found it.

Personally, I find money all the time laying around (mostly at restaurants on empty dirty tables :-) ) and I keep it. There’s no sense in letting someone else find and keep it. Let’s say though that the amount was significantly higher and you found it in a briefcase or duffel bag. What would you do then? Spend it or return it? What if the owner of the money started looking for you instead of you looking for him? That would sure change things in a hurry.

Such is the premises behind the new film Cash starring Sean Bean (Black Death, Lord of the Rings), Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Red Dawn) and directed by Stephen Millburn Anderson (South Central), who also wrote the screenplay. Cash was filmed by Three Good Men in association with Immortal Thoughts, Golden Wings Cinema and Tomahawk Films and was produced by Naveen Chathappuram with Prema Thekkek serving as executive producer.

I like the thought behind Cash and I’m a big fan of Hemsworth, who was on screen for only a few minutes in last summer’s Star Trek reboot but managed to really make a name for himself. He followed that up with a solid performance in A Perfect Getaway and I’m hoping he really nails his portrayal of Jed in the Red Dawn remake and, of course, the god of thunder Thor.

Sean Bean is no slouch either. He became a fanboy favorite after his role as Boromir in Lord of the Rings and he brings get depth to his characters in movies like Ronin, Troy and Equilibrium. He also has a way of playing a great bad guy in National Treasure, Flightplan and The Island, so I’m looking forward to seeing what he can do as Pyke Kubic and his twin brother Reese Kubic in Cash.

If you don’t already know, Screen Rant is a big promoter of original movie ideas coming out of Hollywood. Sure, we like the big mainstream stuff and some remakes are catching our eye – but there’s nothing more refreshing than a seeing a movie that doesn’t have a lot of hype behind it get picked up and made available to a wide audience. My sources tell me that an announcement regarding the distribution and release date for Cash will be made by early February.

CASH's Chris Hemsworth in January's Vanity Fair

Preview of the January 2010 issue of Vanity Fair

The Brothers Hemsworth
Dewey Nicks and Krista Smith spotlight Hollywood’s latest Aussie imports, Chris and Liam Hemsworth.
By Krista Smith

Brothers, actors, and friendly rivals Chris and Liam Hemsworth, photographed in Los Angeles. Photograph by Dewey Nicks.

Hemsworth may not be a household surname in Hollywood, let alone elsewhere, but expect that to change, and soon. Actor brothers Chris, 26, and Liam, 19, were raised in southern Australia, and grew up fighting like bear cubs. With age they’ve become best friends, though that hasn’t stopped them from maintaining a healthy competition across parallel trajectories as rising young stars. After toiling on the Aussie soap opera Home and Away (where Heath Ledger also earned his stripes), Chris got his first American break when he was cast as Captain Kirk’s doomed father in J. J. Abrams’s Star Trek reboot. Chris has followed that brief but memorable role with the lead in the upcoming remake of Red Dawn, the Reagan-era action movie about kids taking on Soviet invaders. Meanwhile, Liam, who had been laying floors back home, landed a screen test for the title role—complete with winged helmet—in Marvel Studios’ coming Thor franchise hopeful, to be directed by Kenneth Branagh for summer 2011. The part ultimately went to Chris. But Liam, who followed his brother to California last March, quickly rebounded and will soon be seen as a romantic lead opposite Miley Cyrus in The Last Song, from a predictably tear-jerking screenplay by Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook). We look forward to seeing how this friendly sibling rivalry plays out as the brothers Hemsworth near Hollywood’s summit.

The excitement is building for the premiere of CASH and a chance to see Chris' wonderful performance as Sam Phelan.

Just How Far is Too Far?

In Stephen Milburn Anderson’s film CASH! he explores the theme of how far will a person allow themselves to be pushed. How far will someone go before they stop themselves under the guise of an authority figure. Do they stop themselves? Can they? When Pyke Kubik comes into the Phelans lives, we see Sam and Leslie perform acts they normally wouldn’t. How to explain this all too common response? Is this the dark side, the bad side that is inherent in all human beings? Seeing evil in another person is one thing but what happens when you see it in yourself...and do its bidding?

Stephen Milburn Anderson talks about using this theme in CASH:

Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process. Moreover, even when the destructive effects of their work become patently clear, and they are asked to carry out actions incompatible with fundamental standards of morality, relatively few people have the resources needed to resist authority.

Why Are Women Attracted to Bad Boys?

by Myriam Lechuga and Traci Moore

Ah yes. Why are women attracted to bad boys? In this special Ca$h! trailer we'll see Director Stephen Milburn Anderson discuss the main themes of Ca$h and the age old conundrum of women who are attracted to bad boys will be examined in his exciting new film.

Since this all neatly ties into the Ca$h! film starring our favorite villain/bad boy Sean Bean we want to know what is it that attracts a woman to someone so bad? In films, television and even real life, women seem to love bad boys. What makes a bad boy so darn attractive? Irresistible? Hot? Is it the risk, the danger, the rebellion? Are nice guys just boring? Too predictable? Unexciting? Just too…nice?

Check out the following clips featuring Sean Bean and Chris Hemsworth. Which character would you want to end up with after all was said and done?

SEAN BEAN

CHRIS HEMSWORTH

And guys—we want to hear from you as well. Do you see yourself as a good guy or a bad guy? What do you think of women being attracted to bad boys? Does it make you want to act up? Or do nice guys finish last and usually end up getting the girl?

Comments

It's the reason why most women like to wear men's shirts, even though the sleeves hang down over their fingertips. The same reason they get all gooey when their fella wraps them in his jacket at the first hint of a chill breeze. We don't NEED to be protected, but we LIKE it. We like men because they're not women - and we equate that 'bad' behaviour with their physical, mental, and emotional ability to take care of us in a pinch.
Lighty

Apart from that it happens in RL to nice, everyday women that run off with that guy fixing their car, that one who has too many tattoos. I think it's a combination of physical attraction, hormones, the urge to do something dangerous, something thrilling and maybe most of all fun.
Govi

I guess this topic is much more complex, and I guess the exact answer on "why bad boys" doesn't exist. For some ladies it is a question of thrills, and for some it's about power. But for some unfortunate ones, it is about fear, and powerlessness. I'm not sure that came out right....If a women is strong enough to handle "bad boys" that can be exciting and so, but if a women is not strong enough and lives a life of submission and fear, and so on....So many wonder why those women don't leave, and I actually don't know why. Love, security, right and wrong treatment.
Lady Blue

I dated a bad boy along time ago and he shook me from my hum drum life and gave me new purpose. He showed me that life isn't boring! Without it I would never have ventured off to another country to work and would never have met my husband!
Donnadoobie

I don't go for the nice, predictable men who put out the garbage and help around the house. They are simply not interesting enough. I myself am quite boring so I need someone else to bring some excitement in my life and frankly, I'd rather have a bad boy who makes a lot of money so I can hire someone to do the housework.
Blue Jay

I believe its due to the basic human instinct to survive and reproduce. A bad boy will fight, takes risks, not be afraid to stamp out the competition. Think of rutting deers. The alpha stag has proved himself in the rutt and attracts the most does because they see his DNA as a better prospect for the survival of the young.
Southernbelle

I'll think more about why we like the bad boys, the truth is that they are more attractive, and I’m not referring to the physical, than the good boys, I think we all have a touch of wickedness in us, (and that’s what attracts us. )
Galamb

I really don't believe Sean is a bad boy...I believe as an actor he has so much more to offer. I loved him in LOTR, in that part he showed real, deep and honest emotions of human internal struggles. I think he's much more appealing when playing characters who are fighting for something, someone, or against an injustice.
Beachrose

Women like things that are enigmatic or puzzling and a lot of the time I think they're trying to save people. Not to make the bad boy good but to understand him and master it or something, like a challenge.
Anonymous

Because bad boys have an aura of masculinity, independence and confidence, these are traits that are very attractive to women . Because women want to "save" and "rehabilitate" the bad boy.
Catgirl

So perhaps the ideal is a reformed bad boy, someone who is interesting and exciting, a manly man who will 'fight' for us, who is independent of the crowd and does his own thing on his own terms, but who does also have integrity and a caring and sensitive side, and who wears a green uniform - oops, am I getting too specific??!!
Lotte

It's worth the risk to give up the safety of the good guy ....better to have tried. Deep down we're not the the type that matches the bad boy... we try to make ourselves feel interesting by wanting the bad boy.. .usually the more popular one but it' s not for us.

Hot of the Press ! Ca$h! News from the Evanston Review

May 21, 2009

By J.T. MORAND jtmorand@pioneerlocal.com

Movie producer Naveen Chathappuram wants to solidify Chicago as a movie-making locale.

At the same time, "Ca$h," Chathappuram's first major motion picture shot in Chicago intended for wide distribution, is putting the producer's company, Immortal Thoughts Productions, on the map.

Chathappuram, who was raised in Downers Grove and attended Columbia College, always thought Chicago, with all its dichotomies, was overlooked by Hollywood. He opened the Immortal Thoughts office in Northfield and set his sights on producing movies in the Windy City.

"My aim was to shoot in Chicago. It just went with my vision," he said. "To me, L.A. has gotten old, it's gotten boring to me."

"Ca$h" addresses the old dilemma of greed vs. morality, but it's not stale. The issue is being scrutinized today more than ever.

In this psychological thriller, some good fortune lands in the lap of a Chicago couple down on their luck, Sam and Leslie Phelan, played by Chris Hemsworth and Victoria Profeta. But, when the sinister Pyke Kubic, played by Sean Bean, shows up, the couple's fortune could be more trouble than it's worth. The couple is dragged by Kubic through one hair-raising situation after another on the streets of Chicago.

Immortal Thoughts has produced a couple films called "Beyond the Sun," a low budget effort in 2001, and "Nothing But Life," featuring some Bollywood stars and released in India in 2005. "Ca$h" was written and directed by Stephen Milburn Anderson, who also directed "South Central," "Hearts of Stone," and "Dead Men Can't Dance" among other films.

Anderson wrote the script, originally called, "The Root of All Evil," in 1993, because he was fascinated by the influence of money at that time. Fast forward 16 years, when swindlers like Bernie Madoff, sub prime mortgages and exorbitant bonuses for executives of failing companies dominate the news. Money still seems to be the root of all evil.

"It's come to be incredibly apropos," Anderson said of the story.

"I can't believe how relevant it is to these times," Chathappuram added.

Chathappuram said if a script doesn't grab him in the first five pages, he sets it down.

But, "Ca$h" was different.

"I read the whole script," he said. "It was very captivating."

Anderson originally set the film in Los Angeles, but changed his mind after visiting Chicago at the request of Chathappuram, who said Chicago was the better city in which to shoot. He agreed that Chicago, a city he'd never been to before, was better suited to "Ca$h."

He said the Phelans are more Chicagoan than they are Angelino -- they're rooted, hard-working and down to earth.

"In L.A., people are there for a job," he said. "But in Chicago, people are there because they like to live there."

Anderson, who lives in New Mexico, said another of his scripts, which is about to start shooting, is also set in the Windy City.

"I fell in love with Chicago," he said.

Producer and director are confident "Ca$h" will get picked up because it addresses many of today's financial concerns such as foreclosure, debt, unemployment and desperation in an action-packed way. They're anticipating a fall release in wide distribution.

Media 8 Entertainment, which produced and distributed the Academy Award-winning "Monster," is serving as the sales agent for "Ca$h," which was shown at the March du Film at the Cannes Film Festival last week with hopes of finding a distributor for the film.

Plus, the rising star power of Hemsworth, who appears at the beginning of the new "Star Trek" blockbuster as James T. Kirk's father and the always threatening Bean, whose works include "Lord of the Rings," "National Treasure" and "The Hitcher," are strong selling points.

"That," Chathappuram said, "is going to add to the glow of our film."

Cast News: Chris Hemsworth cast as Thor

CA$H! star Chris Hemsworth has been cast as Thor in Marvel Studios live action mega movie directed by Kenneth Branagh and scheduled for release in 2010. Chris will play the character in two movies, Thor and The Avengers. No wonder the man is smiling.

The story was first reported on Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily.

Who is Thor?
According to Wikipedia Thor is a fictional superhero based on the deity of the same name from Norse mythology, who appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Oh yes,
there is also a report that Chris was just cast in the remake of the movie Red Dawn.

Of course, we can all see Chris later this year starring in
CA$H! with Sean Bean. Stay tuned for reports from Cannes and the Marche du Film in the coming weeks. The Cannes premiere of CA$H! is scheduled for Monday, May 18.
