Asian Variety Show is airing their exclusive interview with Cash's producer Naveen Chathappuram where he discusses many of the hows and whys of what went into getting this indie film made!
Would you take a briefcase full of money if it fell on the hood of your car?
This is the question faced by a couple in the film “Ca$h,” written and directed by Stephen Milburn Anderson.
Sam Phelan (Chris Hensworth) and his wife Leslie (Victoria Profeta) both work hard but still struggle to make ends meet. One day while Sam is driving on the freeway, a suitcase falls right out of the sky and lands on his car. Sam is at first concerned about the damage done to his vehicle until he discovers what’s in the briefcase, a whole lot of cash.
Realizing his wife is currently at the bank trying to keep their home from being foreclosed, he rushes to meet her. The manager is refusing to help the couple any longer due to non-payment. Sam arrives and, after insulting the man, pays him the balance, shocking both the manager and his wife.
Once home, Sam tells Leslie about the money which comes to a total of $625,000. Leslie, fearful they could get in trouble, wants to turn the money over to the authorities. Sam disagrees and thinks the money is a gift from God, arguing it could make their lives a lot easier. Leslie reluctantly gives in and they head off on a shopping spree and a whole lot of adventure...

CASH REVIEW: BREAKING HOLLYWOOD RULES
Writer/director Stephen Milburn Anderson wrote this script in the Nineties and sat on it until he could make the movie his way. Not giving in to the hellish Hollywood development machine, Anderson and his producers bring us a “genre” film gone rogue.
In a thriller about a nice couple being held hostage by an unpredictable criminal the last thing one may expect to find is comedy. But comedy is what we do find inCASH.
Though there are scenes that are written and acted to be humorous, a great deal of the comedy is character driven. The funniest character of them all is Pyke as played by Sean Bean. The laughter comes from either Pyke’s reaction to the other characters or the other characters’ reaction to Pyke’s very precise, but slightly skewed, world view. After all, would your average criminal demand a “have a nice day” from someone they’ve almost beaten to a pulp? However, when we laugh at that scene, we are also a bit horrified at ourselves for doing so. This is very clever of writer/director Stephen Milburn Anderson to have the audience feel complicit in this dangerous game.
Some of the funniest scenes are between Pyke and the various everyday people he encounters on his way to finding and recovering the money he feels belongs to him and his brother. Of course the British accent, and the” ever so polite” way he introduces himself in people’s lives keeps us, as well as the actors on screen, slightly off balance. Kudos go to Mike Starr, Antony Thekkek, Glenn Plummer, Michael Mantell , and Josh Blue, for memorable scenes with Sean Bean as Pyke . Next time I need to get a loan from my neighborhood bank I’m taking Pyke with me!
Anderson takes a risk by making some of the humor politically incorrect. It works in this case because Pyke is clearly a “stranger in a strange land”, sartorially and in every other way. It works also because Sean Bean always makes his villains human and even charming. You know when you’re watching the film you should fear and hate Pyke, yet our sympathies are surprisingly swayed towards him, and against our hostage couple, all through the film. That is how an actor weaves his magic.
I am sure Sean Bean had a great deal of fun playing Pyke and his twin brother Reece. He creates a full human being (or two) on screen from his quirks and mannerisms, to his impeccable suits and ties, to his determined, yet mocking delivery of the dialog. The movie revolves around him, and even the hostage couple, Sam (Chris Hemsworth) and Leslie(Victoria Profeta) Phelan, are reacting to Pyke /Sean for most of the film rather than driving the movie action forward. More surprising then is the moment when performances and actions take an unexpected turn.
CASH’s hidden treasure is in its unexpected humor, clever characters, and memorable performances by supporting players and leading actors alike. Go and see CASH.
The first thing you notice about Cash is that there is more Bean. More Bean on screen than any other time in my memory. And that, my friends, is a very good thing. Stephen Milburn Anderson chose wisely with his star for his quirky psychological thriller Cash opening next Friday April 9th. Sean Bean plays Pyke Kubic, a quiet, urbane, mannerly man who knows what he wants and knows how to get it. He’s been wronged, or rather, his brother has been wronged, and he sets out to find who took the money, to get back what he sees as rightfully his.
Taking a cue from today’s headlines, Sam and Leslie Phelan are in debt and underemployed failing to pay their mortgage for the last several months. On his way home, Sam (Chris Hemsworth of Star Trek and the upcoming Thor) drives under an overpass where a briefcase falls onto the hood of his car. Pulling over, his discovers it’s full of cash. A lot of cash. With no witnesses, he takes it home to his wife (Victoria Profeta) and they feel they have discovered the answer to their prayers and go on a spending spree. Meanwhile, Pyke arrives from London to visit his brother Reece in jail, who tells his brother that he threw the stolen money away to destroy the evidence of the heist. Before being stopped by police, he saw the case land on the hood of an old station wagon driven by a white guy. Pyke, a clever, calculating man, doesn’t take long in finding Sam and Leslie and sets out to take back what’s his.
Sean gets to play the juicy role of twins in Cash. I don’t understand why no other director has ever thought of before, given Bean’s considerable range. In fact, the scenes you see of him opposite himself are some of the most interesting in the film. The slight nuances that Bean is so damn good at. They’re there and it’s fun to spot them as you watch one slightly more Americanized twin speak with the more established Brit version.
Once Bean is in control, the scene is set into motion and the audience sees Sean do what he does best. We’ve all known that Bean plays a great villain, bristling with rage in films like Patriot Games, or smiling in smug superiority in Goldeneye, or cleverly conspiring in National Treasure; and just as easily he can put a turn in as the tragic but flawed hero Boromir in Lord of the Rings. With Cash, it’s his attention to detail, his impeccable manner of dress, his flawless manners and his charming demeanor that are... unsettling. He’s a nice guy, this Pyke Kubic. That is, unless you don’t do as he asks. And why wouldn't you do as he asks? If you’re Sam and Leslie Phelan, you’re the ones who are in the wrong here. And so begins the task of giving back Pyke the money they stole from him. Every single cent, down to the last penny. At one point Sam and Leslie say, “Can’t you give us a break on the rest? We don’t have it.” And Pyke answers, “Are you asking me to assume your debt? No, I won’t.” Hard to argue, that.
Stephen Milburn Anderson puts Stanley Milgram’s experiment into action; Pyke makes them steal, they’re too afraid to refuse, the more Sam and Leslie start to steal, the easier it starts to become which leads to something darker. “No consequences,” he warns, “until after a decision has been made.” It becomes clear in Cash that no one acts without having made a clear decision to do so first. This is where Cash makes you think. We are all where every decision has brought us to in life. Is it really possible to keep blaming everyone else for all your mistakes?
There is also something completely unexpected in Cash,a subtle use of comedy at which Sean excels. Deadpan humour laid with an undertone of seriousness that gives you a feeling that he has been waiting to play a part like this with judicious freedom for a long time. Go see Cash, have a great time with Bean onscreen for over 90 minutes and ponder all the possibilities.

The world premiere of CASH in Las Vegas on March 25th was a beautiful, star-filled night both inside and out the gorgeous Palms Casino Resort. We arrived and saw everyone setting up for the big event. Photographers were everywhere, a myriad of lights were set up and of course the staging area was set for the stars of the long awaited Sean Bean film, CASH!
Everyone jostled into place as the stars and the hard working people behind the scenes of CASH trooped in front of the press to take their place in the limelight to celebrate their achievement of bringing the independent film CASH to the cinematic screen at long last!
Unfortunately, Sean Bean could not be there for reasons of current commitments, he was in the midst of two films, The Lost Futureand the prequel to Death Race 2000 in South Africa, and flying to the Ukraine for more filming, and could not break away from his schedule but sent his sincere regrets at not being able to be there for this very special film.Co-star Chris Hemsworth could not be there as well, as he was also on location in New Mexico filming Thor with director Kenneth Brannagh.
Stephen Milburn Anderson
First up was the director of CASH, Stephen Milburn Anderson. This iconoclastic director looked very dapper as he posed for the cameras, managing to look modest yet proud in bringing his creation to the cinema without the aid of a major studio. No mean feat for anyone in the entertainment industry in these days and times.
L to R, Stephen Milburn Anderson, Victoria Profeta,
Mike Starr, Naveen Chathappuram
A stunning Victoria Profeta stepped up to the carpet, looking gorgeous in a beautiful Temperley dress. Then came Mike Starr,a very gifted character actor that we all know from countless films including Goodfellas and who shares a memorable scene with Sean. He was affable and talkative, fielding questions and comments alike.Next, Greg Fawcettwho plays the news anchor in CASH showed a charm and zaniness in front of cameras, fans, and his entourage as he strutted his stuff on the red carpet as well. You could tell this group of people really love their work!

Now it was time to take our seats in the theater to finally, FINALLY see the long awaited screening of Sean Bean’s latest film CASH! But first…a few words from its glorious sponsors. Stephen spoke and emphasized to the audience that CASH was a truly independent film. He explained that though many independent films may get made and some may be good and some may be bad getting this film actually made and into the cinema at last was the true measure of success for any film and he was greeted with a great round of applause.Naveen then came up and made a very humble and sincere speech about how it took more than seven years to get to the point we were all at this evening, showing this film a movie theater screen. He thanked everyone and said he couldn’t have done it without the help of all those involved.
Executive producer Prema Thekken came up and talked about what a great experience it had been to work on her first American film and how wonderful the entire team had been. She was followed by her husband and fellow producer and actor Antony Thekken.Antony explained that he was a very well known actor in India and when he read the script an performed his part in the film he thought he had a serious dramatic role. Imagine his surprise when he saw the film and realized that under Stephen’s expert direction he had one of the most comedic roles in CASH. The audience broke out in laughter along with Antony.
We were all getting restless to find out about CASH for ourselves! Then the lights went down, the film started and the long awaited credits for CASH began to roll…

The film creates a truly claustrophobic tension without a large share of direct violence. The viewer may feel the the pair, who were caught by Pyke and feel as they've been caught stealing, even if it's already stolen money. The film also shows how obtained or stolen money corrupts the character and how it can change a man if he gains power with a weapon. Thus, the two obviously find pleasure in the robbery, they enjoy the adrenaline rush, while veteran Pyke as always remains loose and in control of the situation. I would not describe the film as a profound psychoanalysis, but inside there is already a lot of truth.
Conclusion: Ingenious psychological thriller as a social satire - well worth seeing!

UPCOMING MOVIE CA$H SHOWCASES “INKED UP” CAST, INCLUDING UNIQUE “TATTOO MAN”
Tattoos are featured prominently in the upcoming film CA$H, starring Sean Bean (Percy Jackson & the Olympians, Lord of the Rings) and Chris Hemsworth (Thor, Star Trek). CA$H will open March 26th, 2010 via Roadside Attractions.
The film showcases tattoos on lead star Bean, who is known to have tattoos in actual life, including a “Nine” in Elvish in reference to the nine members of the Fellowship in Lord of the Rings, all of whom got similar tattoos; and a “100% Blade” tattoo in honor of his favorite football team, Sheffield United.
The film also features Bruce Potts, known for his fully-inked face and head.
“Tattoos personify what is important to you,” said CA$H producer Naveen Chathappuram. “The Ben Frank tattooed on Sean Bean’s neck in CA$H says it all. He wants his money from Chris Hemsworth, and that’s all that matters to him.”
The casting of Bruce Potts was a deliberate move by the filmmakers; in fact, CA$H Director Stephen Milburn Anderson saw the brightly-tattooed Potts at an Albuquerque coffee shop and was intrigued by his face. Although Anderson didn’t approach Potts at the time, he jokingly told his wife, “I’ve got to cast that guy in a movie. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.”
Years later, when Anderson and Chathappuram began filming CA$H, Anderson immediately thought of the matchless face at the Albuquerque coffee shop and began his pursuit of the so-called “tattoo man.” A friend of Anderson’s at the University of New Mexico knew exactly who he was.
“It turns out he was a professor at the University of New Mexico,” laughed Anderson. “People have asked about the brilliant makeup job on Bruce Potts in CA$H. They’re always floored to hear that it’s not makeup. It’s the real deal.”
“We wanted someone who the audience could look at and think, ‘Wow, this guy is really edgy,’” added Chathappuram. ” Bruce Potts was exactly who we were looking for. His tattoos are a work of art.”
The film’s fixation with tattoos emerges from Anderson’s personal interest in the industry.
“It’s ironic because I don’t have a tattoo myself. But I see a lot of people with tattoos that are really fascinating and attractive,” Anderson said. “Naveen and I thought it would add a new dimension to Sean Bean’s character. Once Sean Bean saw the $100 bill design, he really liked it.”
In sync with the money theme, Roadside and the filmmakers have collaborated with www.Eventful.com/cashfilm to offer moviegoers a chance to “Demand” the film and cash in on $2,500.
CA$H is a quirky psychological thriller that explores the power money can wield over humans. What follows is an action-packed adventure through the streets of Chicago as the three are pulled deeper and deeper into a desperate spiral of deception and violence… All in the name of cash. Joining Anderson and Chathappuram is executive producer Prema Thekkek.
From cubicgarden.com: Sean Bean in this one is creepy as hell. Its all starts with a bank robbery that goes slightly wrong when they (including sean bean) have to ditch the money off a bridge. The money falls on the bonnet of a passing car, when the guy opens the case and sees the money he decides finders keepers.

BIG Cinemas' Momentous Opening in Manhattan
Published Thu, Mar 4, 2010
BIG Cinemas is already India’s largest cinema chain, a division of the media giant company that is Reliance MediaWorks and a member of the Reliance ADA Group. So it’s no surprise that now that BIG Cinemas has taken over a nearly abandoned and insufficiently attended movie theater formerly known as Imaginasian on East 59th Street in Manhattan, it has turned it into something - for lack of a better word - BIG!
In order to help promote the UK DVD release of CASH, the Coventry Telegraph asked What Would You Do for Cash?
The beauty of the internet is anonymity. Read the answers here and then tell us what YOU would do for Cash. Inquiring minds want to know. Are we all the law-abiding, upstanding citizens we purport ourselves to be??? Comment and let us know. We promise not to tell...
In a new poll commissioned to promote this week's DVD release of CA$H, starring Sean Bean and Chris Hemsworth (the lead in Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Thor), the public were asked how far they would go for money.
In the wake of the economic crisis, Brits would consider adultery, prostitution, theft and murder to keep the bailiffs away.
Chris Hemsworth's home country of Australia hails their boy for his role in CASH!
From FilmInk:
Before hitting the big time in the upcoming Thor, former Home & Away star Chris Hemsworth starred in a US thriller set for limited release in the States.
Before local talent Chris Hemsworth was picking up leading roles in big-name Hollywood pictures, he starred in a US film called CA$H, a psychological thriller that is set for a small theatrical US release, before hitting DVD.
Writer and director of CA$H, Stephen Milburn Anderson (South Central), said he recognised Hemsworth's star quality immediately. "Chris had been in the US only a few weeks when he auditioned for CA$H. We saw immediate potential in him, and CA$H became his first film. We knew he was going to be a star."
Great review of CASH on Cinemablend.com and the acting talents of stars Sean Bean and Chris Hemsworth:
Sean Bean has been playing killer bad guys for years, with little or no credit for it. He was the most unsung part of Fellowship of the Ring, but that movie doesn’t work without what he brought to the deeply twisted, conflicted character of Boromir. He’s the biggest reason why it’s the best of the three. What I’m getting at here is that Sean Bean is a badass actor, one you can’t really have too much of. So good news, the new movie CA$H has two of him.
Also involved is the most unsung part of Star Trek Chris Hemsworth, the guy who made half the planet tear up in under five minutes of action as he sent his ship on a suicide mission to save his wife and newly born son. Together they may make something special happen.
Sean Bean and Thor's Chris Hemsworth are desperate for CA$H
From the stunt team behind The Dark Knight, Eagle Eye and Wanted, CA$H explores the mysterious power that money wields over people. At a time when repossessions, debt and unemployment are rampant, it takes a bold look at the human foibles of greed, materialism, cowardice and immorality against a backdrop full of satire, mind games and consequences

We are thrilled about all the fantastic press coverage for CASH since the announcement of the film’s March 26 US theatrical release date. All agree CASH is the must see Indie Film of 2010.
The press buzz started in the summer of 2009 when Variety tweeted the CASH producers about the film's success at Cannes:
The buzz in the press has only gotten bigger after the recent announcement that Los Angeles distributor Roadside Attractions will open the film theatrically on March 26th. Below is just a sampling of the CASH coverage:
Screen Rant says:
After having a good showing and building up a decent amount of steam at last year’s American Film Market, the film Cash has been floating around, working on a distribution deal. The news now is that Three Good Men, the studio behind Cash, has struck a deal with Roadside Attractions for a theatrical release on March 26th, 2010 and Lionsgate will handle the DVD release. That’s good news for fans of both Bean and Hemsworth.
The Chicago-set action thriller features Hemsworth and Profeta as a couple who find a suitcase full of cash that brings with it a sinister character played by Bean.
Roadside Attractions has acquired all US rights to the crime thriller Ca$h starring Sean Bean and newcomer Chris Hemsworth.
Roadside will release the film theatrically on March 26 and Lionsgate will handle DVD and other US ancillary markets through the partners’ output deal.
Chris Hemsworth had been in the U.S. only a few weeks when he auditioned for CA$H. We saw immediate potential in him, and CA$H became his first film, added Anderson.
Stephen Milburn Anderson's thriller CA$H, stars Chris Hemsworth (the upcoming Thor) and Victoria Profeta as a struggling couple. They find a suitcase full of money, which brings "strange and sinister" Sean Bean to their door.

U.S. rights to Stephen Milburn Anderson’s “CA$H” have been acquired by Roadside Attractions. The Los Angeles-based distributor will open the film theatrically on March 26th and Lionsgate will release the film on DVD and other US ancillary markets through Roadside’s output deal. Roadside’s co-president Howard Cohen negotiated the pact with David Krintzman of Morris, Yorn, Barnes and Levine as well as Lawrence Meyers of Media 8 Entertainment, on behalf of the filmmakers. The film was produced and financed by Naveen Chathappuram, of Immortal Thoughts, with Prema Thekkek serving as Executive Producer. Media 8 Entertainment is handling international sales.
Milburn’s (“South Central”) film is described as a “character-driven action thriller that explores the all-encompassing power of money and the extreme lengths desperate people will go to get it and keep it.” With a stroke of good luck, a struggling couple find a suitcase full of money, but it turns lethal for Sam Phelan (Chris Hemsworth) and his wife Leslie (Victoria Profeta). The money fulfills their fantasies, but also brings strange and sinister Pyke Kubic (Sean Bean) to their doorstep. Pyke leads Sam and Leslie on a frenetic and violent adventure through the streets of Chicago and forces them to play by his rules. But they play the game better than anyone expected.
“‘CA$H’ is a great ride, and is timely as well,” said Roadside Attractions Co-President Howard Cohen in a statement. “It’s about an ordinary couple, faced with foreclosure on their house, who kind of go crazy trying to keep a bunch of money that could change their lives.”
Stephen Milburn Anderson’s CASH (CA$H), starring Sean Bean and Chris Hemsworth, will release this Spring; announcement is placed on www.thefilmcash.com amidst concerns that fans will confuse Anderson’s CASH for a low budget film of the same name.
CASH (CA$H), starring Sean Bean (Lord of the Rings, Percy Jackson & the Olympians) and Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek, Thor), will release Spring of 2010, states the official website for the film (www.thefilmcash.com).
The clarification comes at a time when a low budget film of the same name, starring a cast of unknowns, has appeared online.
“We wish the other film good luck, and want to reassure Sean Bean and Chris Hemsworth fans that CASH, directed by Stephen Milburn Anderson, will release this Spring. You can expect an official announcement by early February,” said producer Naveen Chathappuram.
The film bearing the same name was previously titled “Bullets, Blood & a Fistful of Ca$h.”
One Sean Bean fan page suggests that the sudden name change may have occurred to “piggyback” off of marketing efforts and pre-release buzz on Anderson’s CASH; the film has already established a firm fan base through an innovative marketing strategy.
“There’s been a lot of anticipation building up for CASH,” said blogger Carol at The Mighty Bean. “CASH will bring two hot and current actors, Sean Bean and Chris Hemsworth, together on one screen. The excitement has been building up for some time now.”
The film had a successful run at Cannes due to its marketing campaign, which will expand nationally once the release date and distributor is announced.
